Artist’s comments

This is an original and contemporary piece of Canadian Iroquois pottery. The white rim shows the circle which symbolizes a sacred and continuous life cycle. The turtle is one of nine clans and according to legend symbolizes the continent of North America. The clan system was devised to aid in the government and was based on nature. The men holding hands symbolizes unity, brotherhood and peace. The geometric designs symbolize the order or patterns of the laws and forces of nature.

An Elderhostel group spent a number of days at the Centre.  One of the Elders was so impressed by the Native culture that he made this Stained Glass oval and sent it as a gift to the Centre. The turtle is part of the Native creation story. 36 x 50 cm
