One Day School Program


Students and school staff will learn how aspects of the Indigenous culture are easily woven into the Catholic faith.


General Schedule (1 day activity): 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

9:00 – 9:30 Prayer & Smudging

  • Talk about smudging, the four medicines, the feather
  • Explain how and why we smudge our eyes, mouth, ears, heart and body and hands (because we all want to see, hear, feel, speak and do good things with our hands in a positive way)
  • We can also pray for people in our lives
  • We can also give thanks to God/Creator for what we have

9:30 – 10:30 Seasonal Activity Nature Walk/Medicine Walk with an elder using the language to explain the seasonal activity

  • Spring – Mother Earth is waking up and ready to provide
  • Summer – lots of work because Mother Earth is in full bloom
  • Fall – how we get ready for winter by harvesting
  • Winter – Mother Earth is resting because she works hard all year long
  • Give thanks for the bountiful that God/Creator has provided

10:39 – 10:45 Nutrition/Physical Break

10:45 – 11:45 Elder Stories about seasonal activities ie:

  • Maple syrup, smelting, picking berries during spring
  • Fishing, planting and tending to gardening during summer
  • Harvesting in fall, storytelling in the winter

11:45 – 12:30 lunch and physical break

12:30 – 1:30 Scavenger Hunt at Anderson Lake

1:30 – 2:00 Recap of the Day

  • Prayers, meditation, reflecting
  • Giving thanks

Students and school staff will learn the importance of respecting the land through storytelling and stories from elders, staff and guests.
